The most prominent materials in window manufacturing are wood, aluminum, and PVC. What Are the Advantages of PVC Windows?

PVC windows have a very good cost/benefit ratio.

PVC windows offer significant cost advantages both in purchase and throughout their lifespan. Wooden frames are approximately 20-30% more expensive than PVC profiles, and aluminum windows represent the most expensive alternative being 30% more costly. Considering the high energy-saving potential and the minimal maintenance required over a lifespan of over 50 years, savings are also achieved in the long term.

Maintenance of PVC windows is easy.

Maintenance of quality PVC windows is extremely easy and requires minimal upkeep. On the other hand, wooden windows require glass replacement approximately every two years and painting every five years. The latest technology PVC granules are highly resistant to weather conditions and light. Due to the easy maintenance features of smooth profile surfaces, all you need to clean window frames is liquid dish detergent.

PVC windows are remarkably durable.

Unlike wooden windows, PVC windows have an especially long lifespan. High-quality windows stand out with their resistance to deterioration and high functionality over many years. With a lifespan of at least 50 years, PVC windows are also an excellent investment in terms of preserving the value of the building.

PVC windows have an excellent eco-balance.

PVC windows are 100% recyclable, thus saving resources. While 40% of all gas and oil reserves in the world are used for heating buildings and providing energy, only 4% of this goes to plastic production, with only 1% used in PVC. In addition to being recyclable, the durability of PVC profiles and their low pollution levels contribute to creating an excellent eco-balance, helping to protect the environment. PVC windows have a much longer lifespan compared to wooden windows and consume significantly less energy during the production process.

Comparison of PVC and Aluminum Profile Performances in Terms of Carbon Footprint

When comparing the U values (thermal transmittance coefficient W/(m2.-K)) of profile sections, the best result is obtained with PVC profiles. Aluminum profiles, on the other hand, have high U values due to being metal.

Carbon Footprint: Measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2), the carbon footprint is a measure of the damage to the environment caused by human activities in terms of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced. CO2 equivalent is measured in kilograms or tons.

In the study, the carbon footprints of PVC and Aluminum window profiles were calculated and compared. When the carbon footprint of the PVC window profile is 248.8 kg CO2, the carbon footprint analysis of the Aluminum profile reached 486.0 kg CO2. The carbon footprint of the Aluminum window profile is twice as high as that of the PVC profile. Additionally, PVC profiles have superior thermal performance. The good performance of PVC profiles has resulted in them being the preferred material for window production.

The study has proven that for sustainable design, PVC window profiles should definitely be preferred when looking at energy performance and other performance indicators such as energy, thermal performance, and structural performance throughout the product life cycle.
